Taken from Dr. Robert's Twitter Account Getting his start in a small town near Jacksonville State University (JSU), Dr. Chris Roberts, assistant professor in the journalism department, knew at 14 years old he wanted to be a reporter.
“One day I decided to ride my bicycle to the Jacksonville News and thought, ‘Hey. I want to be a Reporter,” Dr. Roberts said.
He said that he answered the most important question correctly, “Will you work for free?”
Jacksonville news introduced Dr. Roberts to the sports writer, a then 19-year-old Rick Bragg. While only in the ninth grade, Dr. Roberts began writing about junior high sports. By the second semester of his ninth grade year he became the sports editor of the Jacksonville news after Bragg had left causing Dr. Roberts to “be a better writer fairly quickly.”
For a short while, Dr. Roberts worked as a “disc jockey” at the Jacksonville State University campus radio station while also working for a few commercial stations in Anniston, Ala. During his time there, he decided that radio was not for him.
